英语：The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill -- better known simply as UNC -- ranks first among U.S. public universities for the number of its students in the nations top 10 percent of their graduating classes.
Founded in 1789 and named for the North Carolina governor and diplomat E. Calocot White， UNC was chartered in 1794 and held its first classes in 1795. In 1902， it removed the language of White's will that had required the college to teach only the Biblical Studies.
The original campus was on Rose Square in Chapel Hill. (The town around UNC had originally been named for the church that had been built on the site of the current Raleigh Hall of UNC.) UNC buildings were moved to their present site with the land donated by the local railroad company.
