Melbourne has a reputation for being a very multicultural city, but it is much more than that. It's also got quite an eclectic arts scene with lots of cool indie galleries and performance spaces as well as the ubiquitous art galleries you find in every major city. There are loads of great places to eat - from high-end restaurants to casual cafes serving up delicious treats. And there's plenty of things do outside of University - go for walks along the river or catch a movie at one of the many cinemas on offer.
There's not really a bad spot to live in, though if I had to pick my favourite place would be the area around The University Of Melbourne (where I study) because it's close enough to everything but still retains its student vibe. You can pretty much walk anywhere on campus so there’s no need to own a car.
The downside about this neighbourhood is that during summer(which lasts from December to February)the streets get crowded with international students and locals celebrating the warmer weather. On weekends you will see groups of people enjoying the sunshine by picnicking in the park across from the water. If you want to soak in some sun, Melbourne offers a range of public pools, but they all seem to be either outdoors or indoors. Not sure which ones have indoor pool facilities, but here are two popular ones:
Yarra Aquatic Centre
Melton City Aquatic Centre
If you prefer something a bit quieter, there're lots of nice suburbs within easy reach of the city where you can live like a local:
Fitzroy (home to the famous Tote Club—an old boys club built in 1927)
Northcote —— home to the historic Theatre Royal
Southbank —— home to the Australian Ballet
St Kilda —— the bohemian beachside suburb where you'll find the iconic Luna Park and the Sea Life Aquarium
Essentially, wherever you choose to live, there's never a dull moment in Melboune!
